Pheromonic

Galla could not shake the finality of the Dijjan’s death. She knew about death, but to her it had seemed so abstract. This creature had died in her arms. She felt empty. She sat, sullen, alongside Ariel at her comms panel.

Ariel placed the Dijjan’s silver diamond on the panel and did nothing more.

“It recorded everything, hopefully,” she told Galla. “I don’t dare say anything on the comms. We’ll let the diamond do its work.”

She looked askance at Galla, who rocked gently where she sat. “Why don’t I get us a drink? I have just enough Stroffy liqueur left for us both. It’s very special.”

And Ariel brought out of her cabinet a small, clear vial of ultramarine blue liquid. She poured two tiny glasses of it and handed one to Galla. Ariel tossed hers back in one mouthful.

But Galla sniffed her glass and sat up, alert. “It smells like flowers,” she said. She sniffed again, and forgot for a moment her anguish. Then she took one sip.

It seared through her chest, all through her innards, and her hair began lifting and her eyes shone. “Ahhhhh!” she sighed, and a lazy grin crept across her lips. She drank every last drop of the liqueur and licked the glass.

“Oh my God,” said Ariel, for Galla stood and twirled.

“Do you have more?” Galla asked breathlessly, swaying.

“No, and good thing,” retorted Ariel. “It gives me a pleasant buzz. I’m not sure what it’s doing to you. Maybe you should sit down.”

“I want to dance,” insisted Galla, and she had never felt so delightful. Every part of her body tingled. “Let’s hear some music!”

And at that moment a rushing sound met their ears, and the drone of an engine just outside the apartment brought both women to attention.

“Who’s that?” asked Galla.

“No idea,” said Ariel, and she reached for something on her counter and tucked it under her shirt. “Not expecting anyone.”

They slowly approached the back door dock, when it sprang open and a tall, black shape swirled into the room. Long, pale hair blew forward from the thermal updrafts, and silver eyes found copper ones.

“Aeriod!” Galla and Ariel exclaimed together.

And Ariel moved aside as Aeriod rushed forward and seized Galla and lifted her just off her feet into his arms. He kissed her neck, and she threw her head back in ecstasy and then kissed him in return.

“Hi!” Ariel said lamely. “I’m just over here, wondering if we got what we needed! The Dijjan died and everything! Oh God, she’s drunk. Great.”

Aeriod turned to her long enough to say, “I got the message. We can discuss it in a bit. Galla, why don’t you come to my ship for a moment?”

Ariel stared at them, the icy mage and the fiery lady, putting off waves that did not need mind reading to figure out. Every caress and kiss, she could not help watching. Ariel watched them leave, stroked her neck again, and realized she was sweating. She looked around her empty apartment and said, “Screw it. I’m out,” grabbed her jacket and helmet, and hopped on her bike.
